Chapter 5-Part 2
Okay, Bob thought back, everything is taken care of. Wait,
he needed a disguise so no one would recognize him driving the van, hmmm..
there were a hat and some sunglasses, that should work since no one should
have time to scrutinize him. Now, off to the abandoned houses. As Bob
pulled into the subdivision he realized that there might be one thing
wrong with his plan, he had not taken into consideration the fact that
it was summer and kids were out of school. There were kids playing around,
and in the abandoned houses, that was illegal, but Bob was not about to
call the cops. He could wait around until the kids left, but then Wendy
would probably beat him home and he would have to explain the ripped carpeting
and where he had been when she got home. Maybe if he drove further into
the neighborhood he could find a block where no kids were. Ahh, here we
go, totally deserted, and deep in the subdivision it was less likely that
someone would drive by at an inopportune time. Ok, nobody around, open
up the side door, get the hamper, and up to the house. Hmm..this house
wasn't very run down, oh well, it would still work, open the window and
toss the hamper in. You could still see the hamper from outside, probably
not a problem, but better safe than sorry, Bob climbed in the window.
Once inside Bob realized that something was not right. There were furnishings
in the room, and he could see light in the hallway, would there be electricity
in old abandoned houses? Bob didn't think so, this neighborhood would
use the same electric company they did, and they got shut off if they
were over two weeks late with the payment. Who would pay to keep an abandoned
house electrified? Bob scooted the hamper over to the corner and went
to investigate. As he reached the hall, Bob heard voices coming from further
in the house, this was really strange. The voices were coming towards
him. He backed into the room, and hid behind the door. Two women stepped
into the hall, he could see them through the crack of the door where the
hinges were. The younger woman was saying that a friend from work had
invited her over for dinner. Not the kind of conversation you expected
to hear in an abandoned house. As they got closer to the door Bob started
to get nervous, what if they came into the room and saw him and the body?
Wait, they had gone into the room on the left up ahead. Bob quickly went
to the window and climbed out. When he was halfway back to the van, he
realized he couldn't leave the body in an occupied house. He turned to
go back to the house and was stunned, the house had gone from being in
fairly good condition to a run down crumbling shack in a manner of minutes.
There were even boards over the windows now. He slowly walked back to
the window, he saw boards on the ground that appeared to have been pulled
off of the window, he hadn't seen those when he brought the body here.
He looked in the window, everything was different, except the hamper was
still in the corner. The room was empty except for dust and cobwebs. What
was going on? Well, Bob would just adapt, he had seen stranger things
than this, maybe it had been a delusion. He would take an extra pill when
he got home. Oh no, there were footprints in the dust, well, back in he
went. Hmm... no way to replace dust, he would just sweep the area around
them, they were going to know that someone had been here when they found
the body anyway. Back outside he realized he should try to replace the
boards that had been pulled down. He put two of them back by using the
third as a hammer. No way to reattach the third one, but looking down
the street he realized that alot of the houses had boards laying in the
yards so that was okay. He got in the van and drove two streets over,
made sure no one was around and got out of the van, he left the hat and
sunglasses, the disguise was no longer needed. he cut through the yards
to get to a "normal" subdivision he went walking in alot. Now, he just
needed to walk home.
