Chapter 9: You got some 'splainin to do

Bob got in his car, wait, he could have more than five minutes to figure out a story, there would be no way Wendy could know when he left to go eat, so he could sit here in the car for awhile and decide how to explain the ripped carpet. Was there anything else he would have to explain? Hmmm....let's see, well the shower stall would be wet, but he could have taken a shower, probably wouldn't even arise as a question.... the rip in the carpet, he knew he would have to explain that. Ooops, if Wendy was home he could not replace the laundry basket.....well, maybe he could to that tomorrow, hopefully it would not arise tonight....what else.....Uh oh, he had left his list of hiding places on the table, how could he explain that if Wendy had seen it? Good thing he had erased bury. Thank you T.V. Well, maybe if he started driving it would help get his creative juices flowing. Hmmm.... should he risk driving by the apartment to see if Wendy was home? If she wasn't he might still have a chance to lower the number of things he would have to explain, namely the note. On the other hand if she was already home she might see him, probably not though. The biggest risk would be if she was just on her way home and they passed in the parking lot.....he should probably take the back exit, but it would be so nice if she wasn't home yet. Bob decided to take a chance and drive by the apartment. OK, her car was in the parking lot, oh well, atleast he didn't have to worry about her driving in while he was driving out. But, he did now have to figure out how to explain the note and the rip. OK, traffic was not conducive to thinking so Bob decided to pull into a park to think. Let's see, hardest thing first. The rip in the carpet.......what could have caused the rip. Maybe the repairman ripped it, no best not to bring him up anymore than necessary. How could he have ripped the carpet? Well, the repairman ripping it still seemed to be the only reasonable explanation, maybe the guy had set his tool kit down and snagged the carpet. Well, he would use that if he couldn't think up anything else. He would give himself ten more minutes to work on the carpet and then move on to figuring out an explanation for the note. Let's see, the best lies usually have a strong foundation of truth, so how did the carpet really get ripped, he had been trying to get the blood stain out, well, maybe he spilled his beer and was a little overeager trying to clean it up? That sounded pretty good, also, that way he could claim that he had not even had a whole beer, he could say that he drank only half before spilling it. That sounded great. Wait, how did he clean up the spill? He had thrown away the bloody rag, but would not have thrown out a beer soaked towel. Hmmmm.. that would also probably make Wendy think she should do laundry, and that would open the door to the missing laundry basket. Well, scratch one good idea, unless.......maybe he had only spilled a quarter of the beer and had cleaned it up with paper towels and then thrown them away......no that wouldn't work, how could you rip carpet with paper towels? No way. Wait, the perfect solution came to Bob. Wendy would probably also noticed the table had been moved.....he would just say that he and the repairman had to move the table to allow freer access to the T.V. and the leg had snagged the carpet and ripped it... That involved the repairman, but only as a peripheral character. Now the note.....He had just written the place on the paper, what else could those places be used for? Well, the river and the woods could be used for vacation spots, but the drainage ditch and the abandoned house did not work to well for vacation ideas......Let's see what the places had in common.......they were good places to hide a body....... obviously that was why he had thought of them.....but did not think that that would be the best thing to tell Wendy. Hmmmm.....what else.....hey, they would also be good places to set off fireworks. It wasn't really fireworks time of year, but maybe he had just been doodling while waiting for the repairman and had started thinking about good places to set off fireworks.......that should work...TIme to go home.
